In the morning every house is decorated with something red. Young and old tie on their wrists or pin on their clothes martenitzas - twisted red and white threads. The red and white colours symbolize life and spiritual purity. The martenitzas are worn till the first swallows or stork come.
Then they are tied to a fruit-tree or placed under a stone. In popular mythology Marta is a woman who has eleven brothers, the other eleven months of the year.
